Independent Study with Professor William Morrish During this semester study, I researched a food landscape in Northern Virginia to assess the available resources for creating a local food hub at a redevelopment site. The study examined the historic significance of agriculture on the site and challenges presented by urban encroachment, such as dynamic system assessment, shifting demographics, and the importance of national and local food policies for developing a strong agricultural sector.

Community Food Systems course with Professor Timothy Beatley and Tanya Denkla CobbDuring this semester course, I examined the barriers and challenges of the Jefferson Area Board for Aging (JABA) using locally grown and produced foods in the meals it serves its senior population clients. Our project team interviewed JABA clients and staff, and presented project results to community stakeholders. The project resulted in a better understanding of the challenges to serving special and nutritionally at-risk populations, including the limitations of local farmers in being able to provide the necessary quantities of locally grown food for institutional use and the importance of institutional flexibility in developing and supporting a strong local food system.
