For the past three years I have had he pleasure of serving on the Purdue Career Advising Council with Mandy. Throughout our work together, I have noted Mandy's desire to do her part to assist others in their growth as well as taking part in her own professional development. Soon after Mandy joined the Purdue Exploratory Studies team she sought the opportunity to serve on the Career Advising Council (CAC) in addition to her advising role in her department. She smoothly transitioned into collaborating with her subcommittee to develop and facilitate a training for advisors on helping students identify their strengths and utilize those strengths in their career exploration and development process. I was, without a doubt, refreshed and impressed with her desire to take on this new opportunity at such an early point in her career at Purdue. In addition to providing opportunities for other professionals to grow in their careers, Mandy has intentionally taken part in her own development as well. Just 1 year after she joined the CAC she was ready to serve as Co-chair of the Council. As one of the CAC Co-chairs Mandy continues to exercise her strong organizational skills through her leadership role on the Council. She also continues to develop the challenging task of creating and enforcing the terms of participation with committee members. In addition to the Career Advising Council, Mandy recently completed the Career Coaching Intensive, a 2-day workshop that focused on career coaching theory and practice.
I have worked with Mandy as her in-office mentor and grateful colleague since she started at Purdue; Mandy’s incredible work ethic and her professionalism truly do embody what it means to be exceptional. Mandy’s most admirable quality is her willingness to say yes to new experiences that serve our students, our office’s mission, and our profession. Since her first day she has been hungry to learn, to grow, and to be of service. She is the most dependable person I know in that she always does what she says she will, always meets deadlines, and always provides high quality work. This is important because she serves as a model for her students – she shows them day in and day out what it means to exceed expectations. Mandy has been an active and responsible member of PACADA’s Professional Development Committee for years. She has taken on several levels of responsibility within the committee and always goes above and beyond expectations. Mandy has also consistently participated in PACADA’s Mentoring Program. This is indicative of how important it is to her to learn and grow. She doesn’t just say it, she lives it by taking advantage of every opportunity she is given. One of her true passions is incorporating career advising into her academic advising practice. As such, Mandy asked to serve as a member of the Career Advising Council on campus, and once again she did so with an unending enthusiasm to perform at a high level. She was then asked to serve as a Co-Chair of the Council because we all saw her dedication. In this role, she has proven to be an excellent leader, has implemented new ideas and directions that will enhance the Council and improve its outcomes, and she has shown all of us how to do good work that really matters. Mandy also jumped at the chance to represent Exploratory Studies in China. She took this on even though, like all of us, she had an already full plate. Not only did she participate in the program, she flourished. Like Mandy does with all experiences, she went above and beyond from beginning to end. Her passion for learning about other cultures and embracing new experiences was realized during and after China. She wanted to be sure that this passion didn’t stop with just her; she wanted to incorporate what she learned into her advising with students. She created a new learning community for Fall 2017 in Exploratory Studies called ‘Global Explorers’. This learning community consisted of half domestic students and half international students. What a cool idea and how impactful for our students! Mandy also teaches EDPS 105, as all advisors in Exploratory Studies do. But, in true Mandy fashion, she doesn’t just teach, she embraces the whole experience and always asks – how can I do more? As the coordinator of EDPS 105, I can tell you that her support for this course is invaluable. She volunteered to be on the planning committee during her first year here – the planning committee meets each spring to review the fall course
