My research fields are:- Genetic control of development.- Molecular evolution of sex determination mechanisms in Drosophila melanogaster, Ceratitis capitata and in other dipteran species of Tephritidae family.- Genetic control of sexual behavior in Ceratitis capitata and in mosquitoes disease vectors.- Biological control of agricultural pest insects (Ceratitis capitata, Anastrepha spp., Bactrocera spp.) and disease vectors (Anopheles gambiae, Aedes aegypti, Sabethes cyaneus); industrial biotechnological applications.- Bioinformatics applied to de novo transcriptome assembly, genomics, annotation and regulative element discovery. During my Ph.D. in Advanced Biology at University of Naples "Federico II" I contributed to demonstrate that sex determination in dipteran insects have a common evolutionary origin and that It is based mainly on sex-specific alternative splicing. I have studied in vivo the function of Ccdoublesex gene, demonstrating its functional conservation in Tephritidae and I tested in vivo the efficiency of a new transformation vector for dipteran insects (th3 pMinos-Cyclops), which I previously realized, using a Drosophila eye-specific regulatory element (gbs) to obtain expression of the marker gene Ccwhite.
