I was a research fellow at the ESRC Centre for Population Change (CPC) at the University of Southampton. I worked within the research strand ‘Household dynamics and living arrangements across the life course’ on the dynamics of household change in mid-life. This research investigated the living arrangements of the middle-aged population in the United Kingdom. Mid-life, often defined as the phase of the life course between finishing childbearing and the onset of old age has so far received limited attention in the literature. The main aim of this research was therefore to fill this gap. Focussing on the middle-aged, the research investigated changes in their demographic and socio-economic characteristics over time, partnership routes into living alone, the association between partnership histories and psychological well-being, and re-partnering (see http://www.cpc.ac.uk/projects/?project=46). I have also co-organised the CPC Seminar Series from July 2011 to January 2014 and have been a guest lecturer for the course Understanding Population Change for the programme PG Dip/MSc Demography. Project “Boys, girls and SET: family, gender and young people’s aspirations to get into science”, in collaboration with Prof. Dr. J. Scott and Dr. A. Bagnoli (funded by the Nuffield Foundation)This project investigated young people’s interest in careers in science, engineering and technology (SET), by conducting a secondary analysis of data from 11-15 year olds in the British Household Panel Study (BHPS). The researchers used quantitative and qualitative approaches to explore three main questions:1) How far does gender and family background influence young people’s aspirations concerning SET related careers?2) Does an early interest in science lead young people to pursue scientific studies and SET related jobs?3) To what extent are young people who enter science reproducing family patterns or ‘inheriting’ a SET route from their parents?
