Mélanie HEWAWASAN

As a new entrepreneur from the Erasmus for Entrepreneur program, I worked alongside Dirk and his team for nearly 4 months. I had the opportunity to be mentored by Dirk on various aspect of my business ( business model, value proposition, financial strategy...). Thanks to his experience and guidance, I was able to find new solutions and perspectives to grow Mel's Talk ! Dirk is an inspiring founder, down to earth, generous and always happy to help ! Thank you for sharing all your knowledge with me !

I had the absolute pleasure of being mentored by Dirk through the A Million Realities fellowship. Dirk is an insightful leader and an excellent mentor and coach. Throughout our time working together, Dirk was able to dig under the surface of issues I was facing, and use clever questioning and exploration of the issue to help me find solutions. His high levels of emotional intelligence combined with his coaching techniques has helped me to explore, establish and become more conscious of what is driving some of my behaviours and thinking as a leader too. At the same time, Dirk is incredibly passionate about social change and this shines through in every conversation we’ve had. I feel incredibly lucky to have been coached and mentored by Dirk and would highly, highly recommend working with him!

Established in 2013, Hatch Enterprise is one of the UK’s leading enterprise support organisations that pioneered a unique approach to enterprise incubation and entrepreneurship for diverse and underrepresented founders. We have supported 7,000+ entrepreneurs and work with partners like UBS, NatWest, eBay as well as Trusts & Foundations such as J.P. Morgan Chase Foundation, YUM! Foundation, PostCode Innovation Trust. Together, we have delivered over 130,000 hours of enterprise support to young entrepreneurs, female founders and impact entrepreneurs. We're now building and growing our Hatch Fund to also support founders with critical, patient capital for them to start and grow their businesses. My responsibilities at Hatch include delivering on our mission and strategy, together with our board and a team of 40+ people. I really enjoy building partnerships and finding scalable solutions to making entrepreneurship more accessible and inclusive. Find out more about our work here: www.hatchenterprise.org Show less

Supporting EY's work around Gender Smart Investing within EY's wider Corporate Responsibility strategy. I developed the research background for EY's CR team around female founders looking at UK, US and EU data and research. I helped establish the business case for EY's CR team to align their internal skilled volunteering programme (EY Ripples) to the needs of female founders. At Funky Renewables we believe in the sustainable use of resources and are working towards a greener use of electricity and heat. We offer a unique and holistic approach to renewable energy generation, specialising in domestic and small-scale Solar PV (up to 250KWp). We are a turn-key provider supporting customers from the initial design of their system all the way to registering their first kilowatt hours on their electricity meters. We're also involved in various Best Practice exchanges across Europe, sharing our experiences in renewables and sustainability. My main responsibility was developing and implementing the organisation's strategy to deploy Solar PV solutions to educational establishments (schools, colleges). Together with my colleagues we developied an educational curriculum that engages staff and students in the climate change debate, whilst integrating renewable energy into the curriculum. I focused on building relationships with schools and colleges and supporting our sales team. Main Website: www.funkyrenewables.co.uk Schools to go green: www.renewablesforschools.com Show less

We launched Embrace in 2004 to address unemployment among young adults aged 18 - 30. My role was to develop the business model through funded and commercial offers. We supported over 1500 young adults into work and later also into enterprise. The company became an award-winning, multinational NGO with partners in 15 countries, impacting hundreds of vocational trainers and educators, professionals in the renewable energy sector and upskilling people in the labour market to play an active role in society. My main responsibilities were developing the organisational strategy and its implementation across 3 main areas: - Young people from disadvantaged backgrounds - Vocational education staff (paedagogy, renewable energy) - Young entrepreneurs - Environmental and renewable energy In addition to the overall organisational strategy, I programme-managed Embrace's Young Enterprise activities and its Environmental and Renewable Energy activities. This included all programme development, fundraising and implementation. Over the 9 years, I raised over £3m in funds from UK Trusts & Foundations and from the European Commission (Leonardo da Vinci & Erasmus+ Programmes), including for 3 large multi-national Transfer of Innovation projects (£1.2m). I was also responsible for Embrace's financial management (e.g. cash flow forecasting, monthly management accounts). Show less

CEN is a national education charity that supports children, young people, parents, families, schools, groups, organisations and communities across the country. Based in Brixton, the majority of our work is in London with a strong connection to the local Lambeth Community. My role at CEN was as Finance Assistant and business development. I helped the director with cash flow forecasts, building project budgets and carrying out general financial admin tasks (invoicing, credit control). I also supported the Smooth Moves programme, supporting "at risk of exclusion" young people together with the team at CEN. The work of the charity was transformational and its late CEO Gerry German was one of my biggest inspirations. Show less
