I first met Dr. Fernandez earlier this year through the NASPA SERVE Academy. The SERVE Academy is a recent initiative of NASPA: Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education. In short, the primary goals of this program are to identify and to develop future leaders for NASPA. Through its SERVE Academy participants, NASPA further aims to broaden and strengthen pathways for the full diversity of its members to engage with the association. Dr. Fernandez was recruited earlier this school year to participate in the second cohort of the SERVE Academy; as a member of the NASPA Board of Directors who has experience as both faculty and a practitioner, I was identified to serve as his mentor. Through our early conversations, I quickly came to see why Dr. Fernandez was recruited for the SERVE Academy—he thinks like a leader. That said, I was even more impressed when I observed Raul in action when his SERVE Academy cohort first met earlier this year. Among the 10 members of the second SERVE Academy cohort are are a vice president for student affairs, three associate/assistant vice presidents, an executive director, and several deans, associate deans, and directors. There is just one faculty member in the cohort—Dr. Fernandez—and he is a lecturer. Further, among the 10, each one was specifically recruited by NASPA because of their potential for future leadership in the association. Among that group of leaders, Raul quickly emerged as the leader among leaders. I observed him carefully listen, draw members in, move the agenda forward, distill out key ideas, and generate a plan of action. He had presence but was not overbearing, and he was especially attuned to inclusivity as the group worked through its decision-making processes. This was quite impressive to observe, and I believe it speaks volumes to the type of colleague profession that Dr. Fernandez is within the field of student affairs and higher education.

Determination and honor are the words that come to mind when I think about Raul. I've had the pleasure of knowing Raul for over three years, during which I worked under him as an ambassador at Boston University and he became a mentor for me. Above all, I was impressed with Raul's ability to manage multiple teams effectively; run an entire multicultural center with a busy daily schedule; and inspire students at every interaction. And, of course, his honest and charismatic persona. Raul would be a strong candidate for an executive role that requires years of leadership experience and a strong academic background as well. He would be a true asset for any executive-level position or board member role and comes with my heartfelt recommendation.
