In Fall 2016, Erin Lamberty of the Design Gym led a five-hour Design Thinking workshop with Illustration students at the State University of New York at New Paltz. As their professor, I observed how Erin deftly guided students through the Design Gym’s creative practice, pioneered by user experience designers. Most of these students had no prior knowledge of the design thinking process. Even as majors in design and visual arts, they had yet to see how specific design thinking processes, honed over time, could be applied toward traditional pen-and-paper methods of ideation. This workshop provided a much-needed bridge from the "applied art" mindset of design, focused on aesthetics and craft, to the idea of a designer as an empathetic agent of change, who guides their work by focusing on human motivation and behavior. Students who were more focused on craft and visual storytelling could now see how illustration—and more specifically, storyboarding—can help people see and understand problems, and ultimately imagine new possibilities. Erin covered the entire design thinking process in a well-paced way, balancing energizing group activities with solo and group work. She showed how each step of that process can be mindfully opened, experimented, and closed. The workshop began with a broad challenge:

I've had the pleasure of working with Erin on multiple projects, this project with DonorsChoose.org being the longest. Erin oversaw a team who were tasked with building out insights to inform strategy for an online sharing platform. There's a few traits that I really admire and consistently see Erin delivering on: 1) The balance of direct and thoughtful feedback to team members, allowing them to learn while building excitement for the next steps.. 2) Confidence in quickly owning material, making it her own and delivering that material in a way in which people absorb. Specifically her teaching of design research. 3) Autonomous. Erin has the ability to build out the scope of her role depending on what's needed for the success of the project. As new factors crop up she'll take ownership and drive something that hadn't been discussed or known previously. Erin is a cornerstone in our organization.

www.erin-yoga.com // I ran a pop-up yoga studio out of my Brooklyn brownstone apartment that focused on providing chill vibes and movement-based meditation. The inclusive environment was popular with neighborhood regulars and their first-timer friends and 90% of classes were sold-out on a weekly basis. Monthly restorative classes provided a regular reset opportunity and quarterly workshops were offered that blended yoga, meditation, and creative pursuits. www.erin-yoga.com // I ran a pop-up yoga studio out of my Brooklyn brownstone apartment that focused on providing chill vibes and movement-based meditation.
