To Whom It May Concern: It is my pleasure to write this general letter of recommendation for Jessica Maxwell. I have known Ms. Maxwell since 2005 and for four years as a student in my classroom, a dedicated research assistant, and as a leader in the Department of Theatre Arts at SUNY New Paltz. Jessica is highly intelligent, intensely dedicated, funny, and an outstanding student. Jessica was a student in several courses. She brought a lot of experience into the room, but an open mind as well. She had clearly thought through some of her notions about acting and theatre, yet was keenly interested in investigating those notions. Jessica asked a lot of questions, but they were always clear and motivated by an honest desire to know more. She has a superb sense of humor and this made her a delight in the classroom and in day-to-day interactions. I enjoyed our repartee as much as our serious discussion of craft and art. Jessica’s written work was nothing short of remarkable. She has solid insights into play structure and character development, and her essays on acting theorists were always thoughtful and incisive. Her focus, dedication, and intelligence were major assets for her as a student, and will be assets for any organization fortunate enough to engage her services. I worked with Jessica on several projects her final year, including an independent study on directing and the plays of Anton Chekhov. Her work was invaluable, thorough, and offered wonderful insights to both myself and the students in the course. As a leader, Jessica took part in several service organizations in the department, such as New Paltz Players and Alpha Psi Omega. She could always be counted on to get the job done, and to do it with humor and goodwill. Jessica became one of the students who represent us at conferences, festivals, and now has become one of our successful alumnae. We have kept in touch over the years and I marvel at her accomplishments, and her truly excellent sense of humor. She is an intelligent and compassionate woman and I happily give her my very strong recommendation. I urge you to give her application the most serious consideration. Please do not hesitate to contact me, should you have any questions.
