Karen is an outstanding planner. I worked with Karen and a group of other instructors last summer at DMACC. Karen uses creativity and a variety of teaching resources to make sure class time is used efficiently (of course with backup plans in the event the young students get tired and/or bored!). Because of Karen's time and attention to details of lesson planning, my job teaching was much easier.

Karen is a person whom honors her commitments and she is all about quality of service that meets the needs of the groups you are trying to serve. I worked with her on several community collaborative events. We worked together hosting the "big event" where thousands of inner city Des Moines families were given numerous opportunities for recreation, job interviews, resume building and professional clothing all at one event. I also worked with her on some "Annie E Casey" foundation youth events including youth from many different races, income levels and background all working on "what would make Des Moines" a better place. She helped in every way to make these the successful events that they were from recruitment to content to operational success.

Project Connect is a school-based mentoring program, which utilizes mentors in order to foster academic achievement and positive social/emotional development for at-risk students. Research indicates that one hour of contact weekly is sufficient to produce positive changes in the student’s academic and social skills (Public/Private Ventures 2000). Based on this research, mentors spend a minimum of one hour per week throughout the school year with their student. Activities include: reading, homework help, sharing a hobby, eating together or talking. Mentors participate in on-going training, such as diversity training and specific learning strategies, throughout the year. Students are identified for Project Connect by school counselors, teachers, and SUCCESS case managers.
