Human resources specialists perform many of the same duties as a civilian personnel clerk, except Army specialists maintain personnel records for officers and enlisted soldiers. They handle the paperwork for identification cards, training assignments, transfers and promotions. Human resources specialists process requests for passes and leaves, retirement and separation from service. They prepare statistical reports on company strength levels and readiness. Human resources specialists prepare correspondence, including sympathy letters for next-of-kin. They process orders for duty station changes, travel and job assignments. They also handle the paperwork for security clearances, special pay and awards. Army human resources specialists maintain the emergency contact information file to expedite the notification of the next of kin, if necessary. When Army regulations change, they post them or arrange distribution to affected personnel. They initiate requests for visas or passports for service members. Human resources specialists may arrange promotion ceremonies, furnish information to military courts, counsel survivors on benefits or maintain a list of promotion standings for local personnel. They may also process paperwork for Army dependents, such as identification cards or travel approvals.
