Isabel Gardett, PhD

Christina Smith is a dedicated teacher, a powerful and persuasive writer, and an engaging public speaker. Dedicated and highly organized, she excels particularly at three skills: making connections with all kinds of different people, translating complex material into simple language, and managing multiple tasks at once. While a graduate student taking a full course load, she also taught her own courses, creating the syllabus, designing activities, assessments, and projects, and presenting information both in class and in one-on-one sessions with students. I personally know students of hers who most likely would not have completed the course without her personal, caring, but "no-nonsense" intervention. Moreover, at the same time that she was a graduate student and a writing instructor, she also served as the Vice President of a graduate student organization, helping to plan, organize, and present speaker series, conferences, and workshops. Overall, I would happily recommend Christina Smith as a speaker, teacher, and planner who easily connects with people from all different backgrounds.

ENGL 101Introduce first year college students to the basic elements of academic writing. Using a collaborative classroom approach, we explore the rhetorical norms of academic texts, learning to locate, understand, contextualize, and reproduce those moves. Emphasis is placed on strengthening the writing process, developing critical reading and deep textual analysis skills. Students in this course come from a broad range of academic experiences, including the Running Start Program and nontraditional college tracks. Students often faced many external challenges to academic success, including low self-esteem, insufficient knowledge and/or readiness skills, and poor self-management.ENGL 102Deepen first year college students' understanding of and mastery at producing rhetorically sound research-based argumentative essays. In creating a close knit and collaborative environment, students develop topics and engage in scholarly research to produce a thoughtfully constructed 10-12 page essay. Through a series of scaffolded assignments, students strengthen their research and writing process, learning to budget their time and how to work early and often, rather than in a rush all at the end.
