I have trained at NUH Nottingham City Hospital since the 1st year of my university degree. NUH has a large, busy and technically advanced radiotherapy department with 5 linear accelerators, Tomotherapy, 2 CT simulators, HDR brachytherapy treatment facilities and Papillon contact radiotherapy. During my time at NUH I have:1. Completed competencies for different treatment sites and pre-treatment processes2. Undertaken full training on how to use the various treatment machines listed above, including various imaging modalities3. Participated in advanced treatment techniques such as IMRT, VMAT and lung/liver SABR4. Delivered patient information and support to patients of all ages (including paediatrics) and their families and carers throughout the radiotherapy treatment5. Mentored and coached first year studentsMoving around to experience different treatment rooms and other aspects of a patient’s cancer care every 3-4 weeks has enabled me to evolve my transferable skills, as well as becoming flexible in my learning and working approaches. I have also obtained a greater understanding of the intrinsic needs of staff and patients which, alongside the skills I had developed when working in hospitality management, meant I was able to communicate and organise effectively with colleagues inter-professionally, as well as be adaptable to every patient during my placement.I have also undertaken additional placements in areas such as Gammaknife at Leeds Radiotherapy department and research and clinical trials at Nottingham City. Additionally, in 2015 I completed a self-funded elective placement in Vancouver, Canada. Throughout my course I have endeavoured to attend further learning and development opportunities, for example: Introduction to Proton Therapy at The Christie School of Oncology and Papillon Study day at Clatterbridge. My particular interests include palliative and end of life care, paediatric care and treatment, information and support and brachytherapy.
