The PATHS-UP Summer Research Program (Precise Advanced Technologies and Health Systems for Underserved Populations) is a program where a Research Scholar will perform research over 10 weeks at a PATHS-UP institution (FIU, RICE, TAMU, or UCLA) under the direction of a PATHS-UP faculty member. The Scholar will gain experience and contribute to research in one of several areas, depending on the lab, including: •developing chemistry to detect biomarkers for heart disease or diabetes developing paper fluidic or other microfluidics and hand-held devices that can read the chemistry on cartridges • developing wearable health devices (e.g. a watch or ring) to monitor things like heart rate • working with underserved communities on gathering information for the design and development of point-of-care medical devices The scholar will also gain experience designing, conducting, and analyzing experiments that have the potential to change the paradigm for the health of underserved populations.
