The opening of the U.S. Government’s Caspian Finance Center in Turkey in early 1999 began a new chapter in cooperation in support of U.S. businesses in the region. The Export-Import Bank of the United States (Ex-Im Bank), the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), and the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (TDA) each sent a senior representative to this regional office to facilitate the development of commercial projects such as the Baku-Ceyhan oil pipeline, the Trans-Caspian gas pipeline, and other major projects in Turkey, the Caucasus and Central Asia. Working together with the U.S. Commercial Service, the Center’s efforts also focus on maximizing American commercial interests in the ancillary infrastructure that will be built as a result of the pipelines, economic reform, and privatization programs. The CFC team completed its work in 2005 with the commissing of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline project and more than 50 other projects in the Turkey/Eurasia region.
