I worked with Álvaro for two years when we were advising Endesa on their strategic decisions concerning investments in new power plants. He joined the team as a recent engineering graduate, having just ended his time in Toulouse. In a matter of months he got up-to-speed with the project, which involved a very steep learning curve on issues related to: (i.) power markets, (ii.) regulation of the electricity industry, (iii.) competition and strategic behaviour of players in such a complex industry, (iv.) financial analysis and, last but not least, (v.) quantitative modelling. After a few months in the job he was able to entirely understand, use and modify the very detailed and complex model of the Spanish and Portuguese markets that we were using. In addition, he became a key part of the team when it came to liaising with our clients at Endesa, attending meetings and discussing the strategic implications of our work, as well as implementing required improvements in the model. After personally having significant experience in the consulting industry, and more recently in an energy company, I think Alvaro would definitely fit in well in both settings.

I've had the pleasure of knowing Álvaro since he joined IRENA in 2013. In 2015 we worked closely on IRENA's Latin America analysis. Álvaro's knowledge of renewable energy policies and markets in LAC, as well as his overall energy knowledge, is impressive. He has the ability to always come up with the relevant data, particular publication or specific project for the discussion at hand, be it at the macro-level or tiny detail. In addition, Álvaro's background modelling skills are very helpful, as he's able to expediently crunch vast amounts of data in support of ongoing analysis and findings. At the personal level, Álvaro is a pleasure to work with, a team player and he always looks good. I fully recommend Álvaro.

I had the pleasure of working with Alvaro as part of a major global study that assessed the macroeconomic impacts of advanced renewables deployment. He was the project manager on the client’s side and had responsibility for the project from its inception to final completion. Alvaro’s management of the project was 100% professional in every way, with clear communications and sensible planning for each aspect of the work. He was responsible for developing many of the key messages from the complex set of model results, and contributed greatly to the overall success of the study. I look forward to us working together again in the future.

    • Ph.D. Researcher, External Strategic Advisor for BP, and Team Co-ordinator
      • Sep 2009 - Sep 2013

While doing my PhD, I shared the key insights from my Ph.D. with BP (its financer), drawing implications for their long-term strategy during periodic meetings. In addition, I participated in other activities carried out by the BP Chair: - Member of the Working Group on Sustainable Energy Policies (Grupo de Trabajo sobre Políticas Energéticas Sostenibles, GTPES): invitation-only discussion group of high-level specialists from energy companies, financial institutions, administration, regulators, consulting firms and academia. - Co-ordinated four editions of the Observatory on Energy and Sustainability in Spain, leading the work of other colleagues. The Observatory is a key annual reference publication within the policy debate. It is grounded on a sound analysis of indicators. A critical analysis and assessment of the obtained information is carried out, and policy recommendations are drawn. Each year, this Observatory is presented in a public session with high-level representatives of the Spanish energy sector, and its main conclusions are widely spread by the media. - Co-organiser of, and participant in, the International Forum on Energy and Sustainability, an annual meeting focused on current issues regarding energy policy and sustainability. The participants in the Forum are internationally-known experts, and the topic is approached from a multidisciplinary viewpoint. - Organisation of conferences of the Reflection Group on Energy and Sustainable Development (Grupo de Reflexión Sobre Energía y Desarrollo Sostenible, GREDS). - Supervising MSc Theses for engineers. Five supervised theses analysing key aspects of Spanish energy policy and planning. Mainly using my PhD model of the Spanish energy sector, and also building a TIMES-based model. - Helping in other activities.
