I have known Cheyne LeVesseur since the fall of 2006. I was Cheyne’s instructor for Physiological Psychology, Animal Behavior, and Basic Processes Seminar (psychopharmacology). He worked as a research assistant in my research laboratory from August 2007 to May 2008. Cheyne is intelligent, highly motivated, and works well independently. Intellectually, he stood above the rest of the class when I first met him for Physiological Psychology. His in-class questions and comments showed me that he was engaged with the material outside of class. He even conducted his own independent literature searches on topics related to the material and sent me an occasional journal article of interest. Near the end of that semester he asked to be put on a wait list to be a research assistant in my lab. He showed the same intellectual curiosity and motivation through the Animal Behavior class and into his time as a research assistant. I especially enjoyed having him in my seminar course because he elevated the level of class discussion. While participating in my research, Cheyne demonstrated that he works well independently. His daily duties were to handle the animals, give injections, set up computers/operant chambers, and enter data. I had complete confidence in his ability to run the lab while I was in class or working from my office. In addition to learning the specific lab skills, he gained research-specific knowledge through our discussions of directed readings. We discussed articles that reviewed the common physiological mechanisms for drugs of abuse as well as topics more specifically related to our research such as binge models of consumption in animals and the effects of early life history on adult ingestive behaviors. He presented his research as a poster in May 2008 at a local conference called
