Senior Software Developer (SES III)
-
Sep 2022 - Dec 2022
My role is currently acting as DevOps Engineer in an AWS Cloud Environment as part of the SES III contract supporting NASA Earthdata systems. I work on the Global Imagery Browse Service (GIBS) and it's on-going transition from on-prem to AWS. I develop code (Node.JS, python) which I deploy to AWS via Terraform with the purpose of ingesting earthdata visualization data from our partners and transforming that data into a web-friendly formats. That visualization data is consumed by end-users in academia, the scientific community and applications such as NASA's Worldview. I am responsible for creating processes and CI/CD pipelines to take my team's code from our development environments, to testing environments and ultimately production. I work closely with security and operators to architect new systems in the cloud and maintain our current systems. Show less

Senior Software Developer (SES II)
-
Sep 2019 - Sep 2022
I am responsible for AWS cloud development, continuous operation in the cloud, training new operators/developers, and working closely with the security team. Over time, my position has morphed into a 'DevOpsSec' position and with this multiple discipline flexibility, I have been able to fully optimize our application. I have written our application workflows to efficiently log and debug the code remotely executed on AWS. I use Terraform to manage and deploy AWS services. I keep code secure and operations free of bugs by implementing CI/CD pipelines that perform scans using Snyk, Docker Scanning in Elastic Container Registry, and CloudWatch logs that send email / SMS notifications via AWS's Simple Notification Service when an error is detected. I have created unit and end-to-end tests which can be ran locally and in Atlassian's Bamboo to test code in our Dev, SIT and UAT environments before code moves into production. These CI/CD pipelines happen when code is pushed and on regularly scheduled intervals. In Production, I have managed operations, performed releases, setup auto-scaling groups to handle hundreds of thousands of requests. Show less

Software Developer (NASA GIBS/GITC)
-
Mar 2019 - Sep 2022
I joined the GIBS in the Cloud (GITC) team in March 2019 to transition NASA Goddard's Global Imagery Browse Services (GIBS) from on-premises to the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud. My role leverages my Node.JS, Python, and Sys Ops experience to migrate the GIBS ingest pipeline AWS using the NASA built Cumulus framework. GIBS is one small team in a much larger multi-year initiative by EOSDIS to move all services from on-premises into the cloud. This move is to facilitate upcoming missions which require a substantially larger data footprint (from 21.6PB in 2017 to 245+PB in 2025) read more here: https://earthdata.nasa.gov/eosdis/cloud-evolution- Work in an agile environment to complete tasks within program increments (PIs)- Build processes to ingest satellite imagery from EOSDIS Distributed Active Archive Centers (DAACs) and other external providers- Work with distributed teams within EOSDIS at NASA Goddard, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, DAACs and remote contractors- Process granules into MRF files for serving raster images to web applications such as Worldview- Process shapefiles into MVT for serving vector imagery to web applications such as Worldview- Utilize NASA Cumulus, cloudtamer.io, and the following AWS Services: EC2, ECS, EFS, S3, Lambda, Step Functions, CloudWatch, CloudFront, VPC, API Gateway, Route 53, CloudFormation, AWS Auto Scaling Groups, IAM roles, Simple Queue Service, Simple Notification Service and more as needed. Software Developer (NASA Worldview)
-
May 2017 - Sep 2022
I joined the Worldview team in May 2017 as a software developer tasked with enhancing the application through new features and technical innovations. When I joined, the application was written in ES5 with tightly coupled components, confusing build steps, and a difficult to maintain codebase. I helped to streamline the build process by removing untracked (legacy) dependencies and facilitated the move from Grunt & Gulp to pure NPM scripts & Webpack. I introduced linting, unit tests, E2E tests and CI/CD to make the development process and codebase easier to manage. I helped rewrite the entire application using the latest ECMAScript in Winter 2017 and began leading the 2.x release cycle in Jan 2018. During the 2.x release cycle, we rewrote the entire application in React and incorporated Redux into the v3.x release (July 2019). I have presented on Worldview at conferences & meetings across the US at various conferences including the AGU Fall Meeting (the largest geophysical meeting in the world), Technical Interchange Meetings, and NASA hosted events.• Lead development release cycle from SIT to UAT to PROD• Maintain, test and deploy open-source EOSDIS Worldview application• Front-end JavaScript development using React/Redux & latest ECMAScript• Server-side scripting with Node.js & Express• Create & manage tasks using NPM / Webpack / Grunt / Gulp• Write python, bash & docker scripts for build processes• Unit, end-to-end, & continuous integration tests with Travis-CI, Selenium, Nightwatch, Mocha, Cucumber, Buster.JS & AVA• Utilize Git, GitHub, BitBucket and NPM for source control and package management• Utilize GitHub & JIRA, for issue management / tracking• Work closely with Global Imagery Browse Services (GIBS) team to implement GIS features• Attend bi-weekly task calls, daily Slack stand-ups, communicate remotely with teams across the US• Travel nationwide to developer / GIS conferences, collect feedback, give presentations & demonstrate app features Show less
