Xavier Childrens' Support Network

Intern
-
Aug 2015 - Oct 2015
Xavier Childrens' Support Network (located in Brisbane Queensland) provides services to children and young adults (up to age 18) that are faced with a range of disabilities (especially relating to physical conditions). I had been granted an opportunity to intern for Xavier, along side 3 other Griffith University colleagues. During the internship, my colleagues and I worked toward the over all goal of preparing Xavier for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) to be implemented during January 2016. The NDIS is a government based insurance scheme, developed to ensure that children such as those at Xavier receive funding directed toward the 'individuals' needs, instead of providing funding based on a 'one-size' fits all approach. The research collated by myself and my colleagues surrounding the NDIS, enabled us to develop tools for Xavier to utilize, in order to implement changes within their organisation to ensure that each child at Xavier will continue to receive funding by the government, for Xaviers services. The tools developed consisted of: ►An information/educational booklet for Xavier Staff surrounding the NDIS and the funding requirements. ►A qualitatively based data collecting framework consisting of a survey and focus group discussion, used to collected data from Support Workers surrounding their engagement and understanding of the NDIS, social inclusion and skills development for children. ►A results booklet, presenting the data collected from the Support Workers, in written and illustrated forms (graphs). The booklet also provided recommendation based on the results found. ►A revised care plan document, consisting of basic demographic and medical history information for each child at Xavier. ►Newly developed 'my goal plan' which included sections to allow for the recording, monitoring and revising a child's goals, as required by the government for funding purposes. Medical Receptionist
-
May 2011 - Jan 2014
My GP Mackay is a medical facility located within a Hospital (Mater Hospital), where two doctors and two nurses are preeminently on site for appointments and general consultations. I was first introduced to the facility as a work experience student (during 2011) where I was able to observe the medical field and also partake in minor tasks (e.g. cleaning the doctors offices and nurses treatment rooms at a high standard) and in crucial tasks (e.g answering phone calls form client and medical professionals). My employer (Dr Robyn Ferguson) saw potential in my ability to engage with the clients to provide a professional and friendly environment, as well as my skills in fast-paced problem solving in emergency situations which is of great importance in life-death situations. Thus, I was employed that same year and trained as a Medical Receptionist, which included the following responsibilities: ►Making appropriate appointments for clients. ►Directing clients in medically urgent situations on protocols and options to best approach these. ►Recording client medications for prescriptions, which required immediate Dr approval. ►Correctly billing clients for appointments (which required a knowledge in medical terms and numerical and what these represent for client billing). ►Answering phone calls from other medical professionals at the Mater Hospital and directing these to the correct doctor (as there was two on site). ►Confidentiality and respect when dealing with patient files and storing these according to ethical guidelines. ►Making phone calls to medical professionals and employing effective communication to address medically urgent issues. ►Cleaning the offices of doctors and nurses at a high level of precession to ensure hygienic practices are being fulfilled. ►Counting money from the till and storing these correctly at the end of the day. Furthermore, I received on-site training in two programs required for everyday use: ● Pracsoft ● Medical Directory Show less

As an employee of Gloria Jeans , I was part of a fantastic multicultural team and worked along side experts in the craft and art of coffee making. During my time at Gloria Jeans, I was able to establish and develop great team working skills, which required: ► multi-tasking with other staff to produce a product of great quality within limited time frames (e.g. producing coffee 'shots' and creaming milk for upcoming drinks) ► Reporting and updating other staff on the completion of products being made (e.g. coffees being produced and handed to customers) ► Utilizing problem solving skills, for issues that may occur during product production, to allow other staff members to continue with their roles and responsibilities (e.g. respectfully communicating with unsatisfied customers and communicating to other staff on how they can re-produce a product that will satisfy the customer, whilst they are working on other orders). Moreover, my employer entrusted me with responsibilities which included: ► Access to the register. ► Calculating money provided by customers and exchanging correct money. And most importantly, I received hands-on training from other staff members on how to brew and prepare coffee which is of award winning quality. Show less
