Art is an important and high profile subject at Brisbane Grammar School and continues to attract strong numbers of students to the authority subject Visual Art in Senior. The subject is taught as a compulsory core subject in years 5 - 9; and is one of the four Arts subjects from which students select two to study in year 10. The School has an established and well-resourced Art Centre and Art Collection and conducts several exhibitions of student art work and works from the Collection each year. In addition the department hosts numerous ‘artists in residence’ programs and a professional Art Show annually. The art curriculum is designed specifically to engage boys in learning that cultivates visual literacy and creativity. The work program is inclusive of traditional and contemporary art media and aims to be relevant to student’s interests. The Brisbane Grammar School Art department engages in pedagogical research specific to the discipline in order to be an international leader in the field of Boys Art Education.

    • Master in Charge Art Support Group
      • Jan 2014 - May 2021

The primary purpose of the Art Support Group is to host the Annual BGS Art Show and raise funds to support the Art department. The BGS Art Show is not a student exhibition but rather a collection of professional artists works available for sale. It is organised by parent volunteers in the Art Support Group. Many works held in the BGS Art Collection have been acquired through purchases at this event using funds raised from the show. Other funds are directed towards Art education at BGS.We are fortunate to receive wonderful support from sponsors each year. Traditionally the BGS Art Show plays a significant role in our community – from inspiring students seeing the collection in the lead-up to the show, to parents and guests celebrating and purchasing professional art works on the Gala Opening Night. In addition, the BGS Art Show demonstrates to the wider community during Open Day that BGS truly offers a broad liberal education that values cocurricular activities and the Arts.It is a special event that brings the school community together to include past, present and future students, along with their families. The volunteers also assist in providing helping hands for preparing student art work for exhibition at Celebration of the Arts (COTA) for years 5-8 and provide funds for our extensive Artists in Residence program. This group is a wonderful resource for the School community.

      • Oct 2017 - Jun 2018

Creative Inquiry: Visual Art for Queensland Senior Secondary Students is a new print and digital resource package written explicitly for the new Visual Art syllabus by a highly experienced team of practising teachers and curriculum developers. The perfect classroom resource for single-year or combined Year 11 and 12 classes, Creative Inquiry provides everything needed to comprehensively cover the syllabus and prepare students for success in their internal and external assessments. Closely aligned with the new QLD senior Visual Art syllabus, Creative Inquiry: Draws on the inquiry learning model and its four areas of study – developing, researching, reflecting and resolving – to explore the interconnectedness of making and responding to art and to develop a better understanding of how we communicate meaning as both artists and audience. Unpacks the syllabus objectives in the introductory chapters, covering the terminology, techniques and requirements that students need to master from the syllabus. Explores local and international artists that are featured explicitly in the syllabus and provides detailed case studies of carefully selected key artists to demonstrate the diversity of 21st century art practices. Embraces the Reverse Chronology approach to investigate contemporary and historical arts practice, encouraging students to take the work of the contemporary artist as a starting point from which to explore the ideas, events, traditions and techniques that influence artists, styles and practices.
