I had the privilege of working with Debbie as she and her board reviewed their business plan in light of the ongoing COVID impact on gatherings and charitable donations. As an organization historically geared toward interpersonal program delivery, the virtual world of COVID restrictions caused them to completely redesign member programs and internal operations. That, along with reduced individual charitable donations, prompted Debbie to consider a strategic realignment. From the initial conversation, Debbie made it clear that everything was open to evaluation during the strategic planning process and she herself was both an individual learner and an organizational leader throughout. One of the most impressive aspects of her leadership was her willingness to ask why and how, not pre-supposing "the right way". She engaged her board and staff independently and collectively, draw upon them for insight and drawing them together on the realignment. Through that collaborative attitude, she was able to call the revised strategy her own, as was everyone else involved. The odds of strategy implementation improved considerably because everyone involved asisted in its formulation.
