The Child Advocacy Unit (CAU) is a specialty unit within the Defender Association that ensures quality representation inside and outside of the courtroom for children involved in dependency and adoption cases. The CAU contracts with the City of Philadelphia to represent children, ranging from birth to 21 years old, who have open dependent petitions in Family Court; are victims of neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse, or abandonment; are truant or incorrigible; are facing mental health challenges; need additional supports as they transition into adult living or desire to re-enter the dependent system through a Resumption of Jurisdiction Motion. The CUA utilizes a multi-disciplinary approach to child advocacy by teaming attorneys and social workers to represent our young clients. They represent most of the dependent children in Philadelphia.
