OMAX Corporation, a Hypertherm Associates brand, designs and manufactures abrasive water jet cutting systems. All systems are designed in-house, from the cutting tables and tanks, nozzles, and high pressure direct-drive pump systems capable of generating 60,000 psi water pressure at the cutting head. I joined OMAX as a Senior Mechanical Engineer and led the redesign of a newly introduced high-pressure pump to address manufacturability and user-access issues. I also helped design prototype pump units for new products. I proposed, and led the formation of a new Sustaining Engineering group in 2017. Our group focuses on supporting and improving legacy products, serving as a gateway between Engineering and the Production and Customer Service groups, and representing Engineering at Material Review Boards. I personally manage the Product Change Suggestion (PCS) and Engineering Change Order (ECO) processes. The PCS process involves researching employee suggestions and complaints to determine the root cause of the issue, and then implementing an ECO to eliminate the pain point. Show less

Herrenknecht Tunnelling Systems (HTS) is a subsidiary of Herrenknecht AG, based in Germany. Herrenknecht AG is a world leader in the design and manufacture of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs). HTS provides engineering, spare parts, and service support for TBM projects in the US. In addition, HTS provided engineering support to the parent company on rebuilding certain types of TBMs, regardless of project location. I worked on projects involving rebuilding 30-year old TBMs for subway projects in New York City. I was responsible for the design and detailing of new components for a used TBM, reassembled in Germany, for use in mining a 45º incline tunnel, in the mountains of Switzerland. I was also responsible for numerous modification programs for new and used TBMs, including Project Management, Procurement, and Scheduling, as well as Engineering and Drafting. Show less

Lund Engineering (now Fives Lund LLC) is a contract engineering firm specializing in machine design and large structures. I was involved with R&D and design work for a prototype machine tool used in the fabrication of Boeing 787 carbon fiber components. Other projects included wafer handling equipment for the semiconductor industry, fish passage structures on Snake River dams, and refurbishment/enhancement work on rocket launch support equipment at Vandenberg AFB. I was also "loaned" to Lund Engineering from time to time during my employment with Construction & Tunnelling Service from 1995 to 2005. Due to the long-standing business relationship of the owners of the two companies, resources between the companies were often shared to even out workloads. Show less

The Robbins Company

-
Project Engineer
-
Jan 2005 - Mar 2006
The Robbins Company designs and manufactures Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs). My duties involved design work, stress analysis, checking and release of fabrication drawings, and supervision of contract engineering and drafting. I was also involved in an extensive Management Training Program during my time at Robbins in the 1989-1992 time frame. This program allowed me to work all the jobs throughout the company including: purchasing, inventory control, manufacturing engineering, customer service, customer training, quality control, marketing, and manufacturing. During the program, I followed a TBM through the design stage within Engineering. I then worked in Manufacturing during the purchase of the machine’s components, and eventually on the shop floor during machine assembly. I then followed the machine into the field, a remote jobsite in China, and assisted during field assembly and startup. Show less

Construction & Tunneling Services (CTS) was a small firm that specialized in the design and manufacture of heavy underground excavation equipment. CTS designed and built several unique tunnel boring machines that had the ability to mine continuously, with no reset cycle. The company was bought by Herrenknecht AG of Germany in 2006. My duties included designing major machine components and assemblies. This included developing the initial concept from customer input, performing a complete structural stress analysis, detailing of the final design, supervision and checking of fabrication drawings, and problem resolution with fabrication shops during manufacture and assembly. Due to CTS’s small size, my duties often involved activities other than engineering. I provided project management for smaller scale projects, onsite manufacturing and assembly supervision, both in the manufacturing plant and in the field. I provided onsite customer service, both during machine startup and during operation. I was involved with the company’s successful ISO9001 certification program and was a certified internal auditor for our Quality System. I also developed and maintained CTS’s corporate website. In addition to this time period, I was also employed by CTS during the 1993-1998 time period. Show less
