Presently; I am conducting research on the Least Cost Power Generation Options for Pakistan. Pakistan, a population of approximately 152 million, growing at about 2.5 percent per annum and growing economy requires more energy supplies to meet the demand. Only 55% of the total population has access to electricity, where as majority of the population in rural areas has no access to electricity. The energy need is proportional to the population growth and economic activity. The energy requirement of country; about 58 MTOE is to be doubled within next 10 to 12 years. In order to meet increasing energy demands; continued research and better energy policy and management is required for sustainable development of country. The alternative energy sources have some advantages, but none will be cheap relative to current fossil fuels. Thus without major policy initiatives, our energy system is likely to maintain its high dependence on conventional fossil fuels for several decades, increasingly interfering with environmental and security goals and using more than optimal amount of energy. However, considering the environmental costs, makes the renewable energy sources economically competitive with other energy sources including hydel, coal, oil, gas and nuclear. But none of these sources can meet the power demand alone. So the least cost and less environment hazardous power generation policy may be implemented. None of the past research carried out for forecasting energy demand in the country have taken environmental cost of power generation and resources constraints into account. Under this study, the environmental costs and resource constraints will be also be considered along with other macro economic and demographic indicators. The research is not confined to the engineering but also several social aspects as well from human psychology to their comfort requirements, purchasing power to the awareness about the sustainable development. This project is based on the analysis of energy resources (fossil fuels and renewable), electricity generation technologies, environmental concerns due to extraction, transportation, conversion and end use of power generation based on past electricity consumption trends, assumed population growth over the years, energy policies of the government for long term and GDP growth. Various studies were carried out over the years to forecast electricity demand considering GDP growth rate, population growth and electricity consumption trends only. However, as the environmental awareness is increasing among the masses, it gets more important to include environmental externalities (environmental damage cost) along with power generation cost, resources availability, and other macro-economic and demographic indicators. This project includes assessment of current and future state of power generation technologies on basis of their availability, capital cost, O&M cost and efficiency, availability of future power generation resources. Then considering the past consumption trends forecasting the electricity demand. Environmental and resource constraints to estimate the Least Cost Power Generation Mix Plan for both Turkey and Pakistan. This project will recommend the policies in order to minimize the economic and environmental cost of power generation and leading towards the sustainable future. Show less
