As a pre-medical student volunteer, I shadow the doctor as he visits every patient while taking notes on the interactions between the doctor and the patient. In doing so, I have gained valuable knowledge on various diseases and the different ways in which to accurately determine the cause of an illness and to then give the right diagnoses and follow up with the best medicines. The Center for Value-Based Insurance Design (V-BID) aims to encourage a shift from how much we spend to how well we spend our health care dollars by incorporating the basic tenants of clinical nuance in insurance benefits and payment models. The Center's ultimate goal is to reduce the amount of out of pocket costs people have to pay to get the treatment and services the deserve. As a summer intern, I will be conducting an in-depth review of the Center's Medicare Advantage (MA) initiative with the hopes of improving/refining the resources and materials for completeness and ease of understanding. Through the program, five other interns and I will have the opportunity to visit Capitol Hill to sit in on a House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Health's hearing entitled: "Promoting Integrated and Coordinated Care for Medicare Beneficiaries" in early June. Lab: Sergei Mirkin, PhD Department: Biology (Genetics) Project: Homologous Recombination and GAA Repeat Expansions in Yeast Large scale expansions of DNA repeats lead to nearly 30 neurological and developmental disorders that are hereditary in humans. A majority of these expansion diseases are linked to trinucleotide repeats. Trinucleotide repeats are a repetition of a combination of three of the four building blocks of DNA. I focused mainly on the repeat of the trinucleotide, GAA, and their role in Freidreich's Ataxia (FA), an autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disease. Show less

The Sankofa Festival was created to celebrate the various cultures of the African continent. In its truest form from the Twi language of Ghana, Sankofa essentially means “go back and fetch it.” Thus, our goal for the festival is to delve back into the diverse cultures and traditions within the African continent that have often times been marginalized and portrayed in a negative light and bring them back in a positive light to the Claremont Colleges. Along with 5 other Executive Committee Members, we were the minds behind the 1st Annual Sankofa Festival at the Claremont Colleges. We oversaw every aspect of the festival and raised over $11,000 to make the festival a success. Show less
