Authentic Education is a company founded and operated by the late Grant Wiggins, author of many top selling educational publications, most notably Understanding by Design. As a Senior Consultant on Grant's team, I was involved in annual consultant summits where a cadre of educational leaders collaborated to hone our craft as presenters across a wide range of pubic and private schools world-wide. Over a 6 year period, I provided school systems with training in UbD as well as other topics relative to their school improvement initiatives. Likewise, I wrote curriculum and led teams of curriculum writers across a variety of schools across the US. Grant's influence on my life as an educator is immeasurable and his role in my transition to International School Leadership was the support that ultimately led to the incredible experiences I have collected as a result. Union County Magnet HS Ranked Newsweek's #2 HS in America in 2015. UC Magnet draws students from 21 municipalities in Union County, New Jersey, just 30 minutes drive to NYC. As a STEM school, Magnet employs a rigorous selective enrolment process targeting students with specific aptitude and/or passion for Mathematics and Science. As Principal of UC Magnet, I worked with faculty to assess opportunities for growth in existing curriculum and course offerings, setting the groundwork for consequent additions and modifications. One of the many initiatives launched was the partnering with a local school for students with Special Needs. Our students worked with their faculty and students to design, prototype and construct low and high tech adaptive technology devices using Stanford Design School's Empathy Design Process. Additionally, I proposed and was approved for the building of a state of the art Makerspace which is now the centerpiece of the school. UC Magnet HS offers an Engineering based curricular program where students earn AutoDesk Certification by 10th grade, demonstrating proficiency in tools of the trade widely considered the industry standard. The array of Engineering coursework includes Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Character Animation, Robotics, Project Management, and other industry specific coursework. Students are encouraged to accelerate through the continuum of Mathematics courses available where AP Calculus A/B and B/C are often successfully completed by Grade 11 and 12 respectively, enabling students to take more complex Mathematics courses custom designed to emulate top universities nationally. Our highly skilled and experienced faculty are diverse in their experiences, many coming from successful careers in the Engineering fields or other relevant professions. In the 2014-2015 school year, Magnet had the highest average SAT scores in the US earning Newsweek's #2 overall US HS rankings. Show less
