In January of 2020, Karen joined the Durham County Library as Training Coordinator. This was a new position for the library, which meant there was a lot of ambiguity and required flexibility to build a foundation for a comprehensive training program. Within her first three months, Durham County suffered a mal-ware attack immediately followed by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent closure of the library. Although she was new to the library, in a new position, and isolated without County technology, Karen’s strong initiative kept her moving forward to engage with colleagues and identify her counterparts in other libraries. Karen cultivated strong relationships, internally and externally, to identify staff needs. She convened working groups who took a deep dive into their respective training topics to develop trainings for library staff. Karen is very detail oriented and her strong self-awareness allows her to balance the need to see the big picture. Karen brings a high-level of enthusiasm and professionalism that would be welcomed in any organization. I hope for the opportunity to work with her again.

I had the pleasure of working with Karen for almost two years. Karen is a very dedicated worker who consistently approaches her work with enthusiasm. As someone with a thirst for knowledge, Karen is both eager to learn and unafraid to ask questions. In addition to her strong work ethic, Karen goes to great efforts to cultivate working relationships within and across teams, and is thoughtful and measured in both her communication and her feedback. Overall, she is a dynamic addition to any team.
