      Maria (Mia) Ong is a Senior Research Scientist at TERC, a science and mathematics education non-profit in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She also directs Project SEED (Science and Engineering Equity and Diversity), a social justice collaborative affiliated with The Civil Rights Project/Proyecto Derechos Civiles at UCLA. Dr. Ong conducts qualitative research and evaluation focusing on gender and race in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in higher education and careers. She is currently leading a National Science Foundation-sponsored study that analyzes life stories of racial/ethnic minority women in physics, astronomy, engineering, and computer science. Between 2008 and 2014, Dr. Ong served as a member of the Committee on Equal Opportunities in Science and Engineering (CEOSE), a Congressionally mandated advisory committee to the National Science Foundation. Currently, she co-chairs the Social Science Advisory Board of the National Center for Women and Information Technology (NCWIT) and serves as a member of the Center for Gender Equity in Science and Technology.
