Gar is a smart, direct, and essential part of the communities he serves. He creates institutions and is able to harness the cultural capital within his environment. I have found his insights helpful and provocative.

St. Thomas is an exciting and growing parish in the Kansas City Metro area. The vision of St. Thomas is to "Come, Grow, Serve: Make a difference for Jesus Christ". Overall responsibilities include working with an extensive number of lay leaders, both employed and volunteers, to reach our mission and goals. There are four full time and 18 part-time employees. St. Thomas has grown from 175 to 320 in average Sunday attendance during my leadership. -Established a summer youth ministry internship program and summer day camp program that includes Arts, Vacation Bible School and an outreach camp called Reaching Out to The Community that serves 160 youth and thier families both from the parish and the larger community. -Developed the "Thom's Helpers" program to train and assist developmentally disabled adults. Participants work approximately 15 hours a week with one-on-one assistance from volunteer ** to learn job and social skills. -Created a Parents Day Out program that serves 40 children three days per week. This provides both members and neighbors with high quality care for 5 hours a day. -Led the congregation through two capital campaigns of $1.6 million and $700,000 to build an expanded parish hall, commercial kitchen, and updates to the existing building. -Re-developed a thriving outreach program to expand to community partners. This work includes a ministry homeless families in transition called Interfaith Hospitality Network, partnering with Comanche Elementary School to bring tutors and staff support, interfaith relationships with the Jewish and Islamic communities, and Kansas to Kenya development and mission trips. -Started the Walking the Mourners Path grief program for the church and community. -Envisioned and implemented a new contemporary worship service that has grown from 40 to 130 in weekly attendance.
