      • Conduct economic research on the Medical Cannabis (MC) industry and its financial impact on patients at the largest outpatient neurologic institute and physician-directed cannabis clinic in the country under the direction of Dr. Lazslo Mechtler.• Performed a comparative analysis between Caucasian and African-American patients using Medical Cannabis as an adjunctive therapy to various neurological disorders.o Audited and analyzed over 1,500 physician-dictated charts and discovered comparable improvements in symptomatology with a cost and retention rate disparity between these populations. o Implemented a geographic overlay of the study population based on zip-code, which enabled the team to associate the financial restraints of MC treatment with the median income of respective regions in New York State.o Determined that Caucasians paid a higher average monthly expense of $227.13 while living in higher-income regions, suggesting that they took the recommended dose of MC at a greater frequency relative to African-American patients. Also discovered that 39% of African-American patients reported financial barriers associated with MC therapy (average monthly expense of $122.31), while only 12% of Caucasians experienced this struggle. CRISPR-Cas is the adaptive bacterial immune system by which prokaryotes (bacteria and archaea) can incorporate the genetic material of bacteriophages as spacer DNA into their genomes, conferring memory of the specific virus. If the phage were to infect the bacteria again, the spacer DNA corresponding to that phage's genetic material will be transcribed along with a set of Cas (CRISPR-associated) genes, which then associate to form a CRISPR-Cas complex that binds the phage DNA and deactivates it via cleavage, thus stopping the infection before it starts. Currently, I am investigating the molecular determinants of CRISPR RNA (crRNA) maturation in staphylococcus epidermidis, which harbors a Type III CRISPR system, as well as the function of non-Cas nucleases in this process. The implications of this research will hopefully provide new insights into the bacterial immune system, as well as lead us toward novel antibiotic therapies in a time where current treatments are becoming increasingly less effective.
