Gareth is very knowledgeable and tactical but also very down to earth and I have no hesitation recommending him in circumstances when we have a conflict of interest.

If you want your employment lawyer to be tenacious, diligent, courageous, intellectually vigourous, but also a really nice guy, Gareth is your man!

      • May 2016 - May 2018

I was honoured to be elected the Chair of the Employment Lawyers Association, the leading association for employment lawyers with nearly 6,000 members, The ELA runs a vast training programme, lobbies Government on an apolitical basis for better employment law, publishes a monthly magazine, runs pro bono activities, has international and in-house sub-groups as well as carrying out an array of other activities. For the six years until May 2014 I had ultimate responsibility for the extensive training programme of the Employment Lawyers Association, the primary provider of training to the employment law community. This reflects my belief that technical excellence is the bedrock of what we do (but should not be assumed to be a "given" by clients). Since then, I held the position of Deputy Chair of ELA, before becoming Chair. That position gave me the good fortune to meet the key influencers on the development of employment law from judges to legislators to peers. I continue to serve ELA in a variety of ways Show less

I was the fifth partner in what during this time grew from being a small department into the largest and one of the top ranked employer practices in London. I left after many happy years in order to take on a head of department role and to ensure I could continue to use my expertise both on behalf of employees and employers (whereas Lewis Silkin were increasingly focused on acting for employers).

I advised employers, particularly in the marketing services industry and employees typically from financial services on employment law. I sued banks for failing to pay discretionary bonuses and discrimination.

I experienced TUPE from the sharp end when Frere Cholmeley Bischoff, the firm I joined, merged with Eversheds. I did a lot of work defending investment banks against claims brought by employees and concluded I would rather be acting for the employees. I also became an expert on TUPE. I defended NHS Trusts and Health Authorities against claims brought by their staff. I did all my own advocacy and was in the ET all the time. It was a white knuckle ride.
