R&D Mechanical Engineer Intern
-
Aug 2019 - Aug 2020
I had the opportunity to undertake a 1 year unpaid internship at an industry placement abroad in Izmir, Turkey. I worked in the R&D mechanical team designing and producing parts for a variety of heavy duty recycling machinery and equipment such as inclined shears, scrap balers and briquetting presses, using CAD software. I also had the opportunity to work in numerous departments within the company such as electrical, CNC, paint, quality control, health & safety and sales department. During these times I was able to enhance my inter-personal and soft skills such as self-confidence, maturity and adaptability, especially during the start of the COVID-19 Pandemic period. I had the opportunity to learn a new language, embrace and understand new cultures and have new experiences. I developed many skills both in the workplace and outside of it, practical things such as how a business is run and project management, and I also found that a lot of the theoretical work which I have studied at university, specifically materials from year 1 and structures from year 2, transferred over into the production of these machines. Overall, I learnt a lot from this year and I am eternally grateful to both my supervisor and Aymas Makina for enabling me to learn and grow as an engineer during my time there.
