Pro Natura International (PNI) is a Brazilian-born international NGO that over the last 38 years has pioneered the field of sustainable development in 63 countries. PNI is on the cutting edge of bottom-up community development, climate-smart agroecology (especially the use of biochar), agroforestry, and biodiversity exploration. PNI is the recipient, amongst a number of other prizes, of the American Academy of Sciences' 1997 Mitchell Prize, widely considered the "Nobel of Sustainability." We're now scaling up our work through a strategic alliance with the IFC (World Bank) which has chosen us as their partner to address and minimize, through the use of blended finance and long-term, community-created developmental plans, the social and environmental impacts caused by their large infrastructure investments. We have ongoing joint pilots in Peru, Northern Mozambique, Brazil, and soon Nepal. Over the last 15 years, we have developed breakthrough climate-smart agroecological solutions. The "green charcoal" we have created to address one of the main causes of deforestation in 40%cheaper than traditional charcoal and safer to use (charcoal kills double the people than malaria, TB and HIV together do). Our biochar-enhanced Super Vegetable Gardens (we are growing them in 17 countries, including 15 African ones) are probably the most ecologically effective way to grow food in extreme desert environments- see http://www.pronatura.org/?page_id=521&lang=en Our "Planet Revisited" expeditions, done in conjunction with Paris' Museum of Natural History, are the most extensive expedition program in the world devoted to the study of biodiversity.
