I worked with Mike as a product manager at Hearst. Mike is a smart guy who knows his code inside and out, but he's also a good writer who can clearly communicate complex development issues, which was especially beneficial for non-technical product stakeholders. When issues arose Mike was always willing to engage in discussion and talk things through to find a solution, all while keeping his keen sense of humor.

Mike has a knack for quickly assessing problems, roadblocks and opportunities for improvement and producing viable solutions that not only fix but also improve the processes and/or applications in question. Using his exceptional technical skills, he provides practical and inventive solutions. His sense of humor and quick wit make the workplace much more enjoyable and his dedication is a valuable asset to the teams he works with. I was fortunate to have worked with him on projects that involved facilitating multiple web feeds to online vendors that partner with the Houston Chronicle.

    • Web Infrastructure Team / DI Manager

In October 2013, we combined the DevOps Initiative virtual team with the WSC (Web Solutions Center) team to form a single unified Infrastructure Team that I now manage. We are responsible for the uptime of the various Hearst Newspaper websites (www.sfgate.com, www.chron.com, www.mysa.com, etc) as well as all of the infrastructure that powers our production, preproduction and QA testing environments. And since we are still DI, we continue to support code deployments and innovate new methods of delivery through automation so that we can deploy early, often, and with minimal risk to our production environment.

    • DI Manager (DevOps Initiative)

Manager of DI - DevOps Initiative - a virtual group made up of people from both our Development (WCM Core - our Content Management System) and Operation (Web Infrastructure Support) teams. The idea is to bridge the gap between the two teams where both teams meet naturally; Code Deployments. We aim to improve our Deployment processes through Automation, Continuous Integration, Automated Testing (Functional, Regression, and Load Testing), and Continuous Delivery.

    • Director of DevOps
      • May 2021 - Nov 2021

Directing a team of DevOps Engineers who are responsible for the application infrastructure that powers the platform on which the Hearst Newspapers' websites live. Put another way, we manage hosting for sites like sfgate.com and chron.com and are responsible for their uptime. I work with a group of exceptionally bright engineers who are intrigued by challenges and are motivated to solve problems quickly and efficiently. I also maintain vendor relationships, negotiate contracts, interview and hire new employees, and work with leads/engineers from other groups on numerous projects. When possible, I keep my own developer/DevOps skills sharp by handling some requests (DNS, SSL, LAMP Stack development/management) myself.
