The library profession is fortunate to have Karen as one of our members. Her work exemplifies the best that we have to offer: skilled leader, generous and collaborative colleague, knowledgeable researcher, detail oriented project manager, tenacious and clever problem solver and fun to be around. She takes on new challenges with confidence,is willing to make decisions and take calculated risks - all with the goal of improving library service to our patrons.

Karen is a sharp, creative, clear-minded library professional who is great at cross-departmental collaboration as she is highly capable of viewing the organization on multiple dimensions. In my role as Marketing Communications Coordinator, I often consulted with Karen on conceptual matters. She has a great sense for marketing strategy and design, and in an organization that didn't have it's own professional graphic design, Karen often went above and beyond her role, providing not just design, but social media expertise, and copywriting assistance when asked for help. Karen is hard-working, astute, and would be an asset on any library team. I miss her since she moved out of state!

Responsible for the selection and deselection of the adult fiction and nonfiction print collections. Managed a budget of $330,000. Coordinated the activities of nine selectors, using a system of my own devising that was entirely electronic, leading to a more accurate and efficient acquisitions process. Trained staff across departments on using Title Source 360 and collectionHQ. Began a major, branch-wide deselection project using collectionHQ, particularly focusing on the adult nonfiction collection. Handled patron purchase requests and gifts to the adult print collection. Provided both readers advisory and reference services. Coordinated the Mission Impossible book discussion program, a unique, popular yearlong book discussion program devoted to reading very difficult novels, including Ulysses, War and Peace, Flannery O'Connor's Complete Short Stories, and the first two volumes of In Search of Lost Time. Mission Impossible included bi-monthly book discussions, related scholarly lectures, art exhibits, and more. In its first year alone, the program added 700 to the library's program attendance. Served as the Library's digital books liaison, which included handling in-person, phone, and electronic requests for assistance using OverDrive, creating a comprehensive collection of print and online help resources, delivering small and large-scale programming related to digital books (both for patrons and staff). Managed five off-site "take one, leave one" book collections in Evanston. Responsible for the maintenance, content, and design of the Library's adult Facebook and Twitter pages. Filmed and edited online movies promoting library services and events. Show less
