      In 2014 I started to blog about my vision on my profession, and introduced the term Business Assistant. I had been an assistant for more than 20 years at that time, and I knew there was much, much more we could achieve when it comes to supporting our executives. But I struggled with a good underpinning of my arguments what the exact benefits would be if assistants would think more in terms of business processes. In 2015 I got noticed by Secretary Management Institute (SMI) and was asked to train and develop a course, called Business Assistant. In 2018 due to personal circumstances I had to put my role as trainer on hold. Maybe in the future, I will pick up this role again. Now, 6 years later (2020), with a Bachelor in Psychology and a thesis on development and career opportunities of assistants in The Netherlands, my 20+ years experience as assistant and extended knowledge on history and future of the profession, I know exactly what the benefits are if assistants arrange their work more around business processes instead of only around people. And good education is a great contributor in this mindset. However, for significant changes in support for the long-term, more systematical changes are required. I build the basis, bring focus, embed LEAN thinking, provide (automated) tools and show assistants ánd managers how to stay aligned. Not from a hierarchical position, but as professionals that all contribute to business goals. Show less
