As sponsor of a range of large scale and complex projects, Phil provided the strategic vision and leadership to drive progress as well as invaluable personal support through challenge as well as encouragement. His ever positive outlook and willingness to explore new directions and innovative approaches create opportuniteis for development both at organisational and personal level and have made it a real pleasure, as well as a hugely rewarding experience to work with him.

Education can transform individuals and countries, but an effective education system must operate on a financially sustainable basis. Effective education starts with parent and child communication from birth and must be sustained through nursery, primary, secondary, tertiary and continuing education after that. I will promote financial education at all levels, particularly in the University sector, to make our society better. August 2015 UpdateThe team have achieved well deserved recognition with a shortlisting for the Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Awards this year. Although we didn't win it was great recognition by the sector. We were very proud to win the finance team of the year in the Scottish Accountancy & Finance Awards run by Business Insider. It takes a long time to build the track record of success and the depth of talent in the team is essential to create the stories that demonstrate the leadership being recognised; well done the Finance Team !Dec 2014 UpdateOur Finance Transformation Project (FTP) over the last two years has been a great success and the team were recognised for their efforts with a Silver award from IIP last month. This is a fantastic result as it was the Finance team's first attempt at IIP recognition. The University has been reaffirmed at number 17 in the QS world rankings and there is a real buzz of confidence among staff. I am currently Deputy Chair for the British Universities Finance Directors Group which is a highly collegiate and effective representative body for FDs of all sizes and its exec Director, Karel Thomas is one of our greatest assets ! September 2013 UpdateI started at the University of Edinburgh on 3rd September 2012 and after just one year this is shaping up to be potentially the best job I've ever had ! Education is a wonderful business to be in and I am privileged to be able to play a part in supporting the development of the University. I helped our business partners Balfour Beatty on the Holyrood Project (which will see nearly 1,200 beds for Postgraduate students developed on Holyrood Road in Edinburgh) where, working with our advisers including Quayle Munro and Pinsent Mason I helped raise £63m in two project bonds that were wrapped by Assured Guaranty. Great team effort by both sides and a useful introduction to Edinburgh University for some London based potential investors who now know who we are.
