He is decisive, clear-minded, and objective, even in the highest pressure moments, and encourages diverse thought among his team - a key component to developing a lasting, successful product. Justin is the type of manager that genuinely cares about the growth and development of each and every team member, and fosters that growth on a daily basis. The wealth of knowledge and experience he brings to the table is invaluable. A truly rare find, Justin is one of the most knowledgeable and hard-working people I have ever had the pleasure of working with.
Jamie Conklin
Justin is a rare find – a talented engineer who not only IS an excellent team manager, but who truly enjoys his leadership role. Justin embodies servant leadership and continuously seeks to be a resource for his team. His honest and straightforward communication builds trust effectively. This trust translates directly to his ability to offer candid actionable advice and feedback to his team. I have learned a lot about leadership from him. On the technical front, Justin is resourceful, clever, and knowledgeable. Having built multiple SaaS based applications and mobile apps, he brings tremendous experience to the development team. When designing, Justin fluidly switches between brainstorming and dreaming mode to the pragmatic nuts-and-bolts. Finally, Justin understands the inner workings his company and this enables him to flex with the needs business. I thoroughly enjoyed collaborating and designing new systems with him.

I built one of the highest performing teams I've ever had the pleasure of participating on. I made sure everyone's voice was heard and I made sure that everyone was fairly compensated. Basically, I built a great team and implemented an open, inclusive and healthy engineering culture. Then I lead and I listened. I introduced engineering best practices at the engineering and executive levels. At the engineering level, I introduced agile standards and process within the team and held the team to a high standard of compliance through a cycle of execution, retrospection and adjustment. At the executive level, I educated about those same standards and processes. I oversaw a large pivot for the company away from an aged stack with many age related problems to a new technology targetting new and existing clients. I defined this new stack, presented the new stack to our board of directors and owners, and finally architected and lead the engineering team through implementation. This work continues today. In my last 18 months, I joined the executive team and presented and advised on technology progress to the company board of directors and owners. I worked with the rest of the executive team to implement the technology pivot and to develop, and re-develop, relationships with new and exisiting clients. Show less

Vice President of Engineering

Sep 2015 - Sep 2017
I managed and lead using servant leadership, empowerment, trust and open communication on my teams. I lead multiple groups within IO Education including all of mobile development, PALS (www.palsk8.com) development, our central OAuth2 compliant SSO authentication server and the design team. I focused on continual delivery of high quality software while also incrementally improving our internal processes through data analysis and employee and customer engagement. Over the course of 4 years I introduced all of the companies software development processes, procedures and tools and then improved upon them through the analysis of data and the building of additional in-house monitoring tools. I lead the introduction of changes slowly so that we could measure and adjust as we improved. I also lead the software development effort on several high profile projects, both internal and external. IO Education is an education technology company that provides student, parent, teacher and administrator tools and dashboards for improving educational outcomes. We have clients throughout the united states. Show less

Director of Test and Release
-
Mar 2012 - Dec 2012
Designed, developed and implemented tools and processes that provided measurable improvement in both testing and release management.Tools included plugins for Maven and JetBrains' TeamCity that ensure the internally tested application is, bit for bit, the same application the client sees and is, bit for bit, the same application that is submitted to Apple. These tools remove the burden of juggling certificates and provisioning profiles from the developer and centrally locate it in continuous integration while also ensuring that only code that's been tested gets shipped.Processes included development of test plans and test reports and integration in to the existing development process to ensure testing is unavoidable and shipped software is of the highest quality. Senior Software Developer
-
Jan 2011 - Nov 2011
Meddius provides highly available, mission critical, integration services to major national healthcare systems. As a Senior Software Developer, responsibilities included maintenance of legacy systems while also re-implementation of core technologies from the ground up using OSGi in order to extend and strengthen systems availability. Worked on a small team that implemented monitoring systems by extending vFabric’s Hyperic using Hyperic's Management Plugins. The plugins were not adequate so the team added additional overlays to customize Hyperic to suit Meddius’ needs. These customizations allow Meddius to be aware of issues before their clients and to be extremely responsive. Show less
