The Hawai‘i Space Exploration Analog and Simulation (HI-SEAS) is a Mars and Moon exploration analog research station, currently operated by the International MoonBase Alliance. Located approximately 8,200 feet above sea level, the HI-SEAS habitat is a 1,200 square foot dome located on a Mars-like site on the Mauna Loa volcano on Hawai‘i Island. HI-SEAS has been the home to five successful long-duration (4 to 12 month) NASA Mars simulation missions and tens of other analog space missions in collaboration with multiple space agencies, companies, and organizations worldwide. Ambassadors gain access to Planet's growing imagery archive centered around their geographic area of focus utilizing Planet Explorer Beta, a unique dataset featuring daily satellite imagery. Artist Richelle Gribble etched artworks onto the outside panels of four "Dove" satellites. "Overview" and "Linked" are two large-scale, mixed-media installations depicting networks which shape and connect our planet. Inspired by author Frank White's concept of the "overview effect," this painting aims to create a renewed sensation of viewing Earth as if from space in order to more clearly see our interconnectivity from a new perspective. By merging biological, technological, and social systems across micro and macro timescales, artist Richelle Gribble suggests that we are evolving towards hive-like connectivity within a complex planetary society.
