Head Curriculum Writer

Nov 2021 - Feb 2022
As the head writer for a team of four creating a five-unit college writing class, I edited lesson plans, slides, assignments, and assessments. I gave specific and actionable feedback to my teammates to ensure continuity throughout our lessons and to increase student engagement with each lesson in our course. As a writer on the team, I wrote lessons for both a creative writing and poetry unit for a college writing seminar, which included 18-22 lessons/unit. I wrote assignments and both formative and summative assessments that measure reading and writing skills aligned to Common Core State Standards, as well as highly-engaging lesson scripts and slides that are then filmed for students to watch independently. Each lesson resulted in a five-ten minute film that engages students in the skill and text for the day. Show less

I supported 15-20 college students each semester with career readiness, including resume creation, interviewing skills, and cover letter writing. I gave specific and actionable feedback, tracked student success, and implemented systems of communication to ensure strong mastery of the program. Almost all students supported through the end of the program (96% Spring '21, 100% Fall '21) met Braven's competitive metrics of successful accelerator completion. As an English teacher for Minnesota's largest online school, I taught 210 students from diverse backgrounds World Literature (10th) and American Literature (11th). I co-taught weekly virtual lessons using Adobe Connect and implemented routine collaboration with co-teachers to create highly-participatory, skill-based, and topically-relevant live lessons. I analyzed data to inform decisions, calling 10+ students and families daily and individualizing student lessons to best fit unique needs. My first foray into online teaching began with the competitive ESL platform Magic Ears. I taught lessons to students in China using a sophisticated online platform and skills taught ranged from beginning phonics to high-school reading comprehension. All of my lessons met Magic Ears' strict time/pacing requirements and 99% of feedback received earned 4-5 stars from students and families. I taught English to over 250 non-native learners (grades 7-12) in a suburb of Madrid, Spain. Lesson content depended on native teacher preference, but I frequently received autonomy to lead my own lessons, which typically were project- or discussion-based. I differentiated both delivery of lesson and content based on skill of each section, as students were grouped based on grade level and four levels of English proficiency. Content Team Lead
-
Aug 2017 - Jun 2019
I was selected to lead the 9th and 10th grade reading teams as a subject facilitator (content team lead).I met with the 10th grade reading teacher weekly to advise and support her with curriculum writing, data analysis, and classroom culture. With the 9th grade team, I facilitated weekly meetings with the team of six teachers where we analyzed team-wide trends, curricular design, and execution. I led a quarterly data conference for our school leaders detailing our students' progress on both a Lexile assessment and PSAT reading section. Our team's hard work increased student achievement on the PSAT reading section +8 points between SY18 and SY19. Show less

Reading Teacher and Advisor
-
Jul 2015 - Jun 2019
I joined the staff of Chicago Bulls College Prep as a 9th grade reading teacher and 9th grade advisor. I originally taught 66% of the 9th grade every other day (200+ students), but eventually grew Chicago Studies to an every-day class with 100% of students in general education enrolled. I facilitated Harkness-style discussion in class with students taking various leadership roles throughout the year. I collaborated with multiple teachers from the student support team and taught students with IEPs every year, attending multiple IEP meetings and utilizing various strategies to support students of all reading levels. Students taught averaged +25 points of growth on the reading portion of the PSAT at the end of SY19.As an advisor, I looped with my students all four years. I implemented lessons ranging from SMART goal setting to discussions about life in college; 100% of my senior advisees graduated on time and were accepted into a four-year college. One of the most rewarding moments of my teaching career was congratulating those 18 students as they received their diploma and I will forever be proud of them. Show less

Moving to middle school, I taught reading and English to four sections of seventh graders and lead Responsive Classroom-structured morning meeting daily for a homeroom of about 24 students. Texts taught included The House on Mango Street and The Outsiders, along with various short stories, poems, and memoir excerpts. As a 6th-7th grade team, we created and implemented our own classroom-management system and held monthly school-wide incentive celebrations. A colleague and I co-planned a month-long interdisciplinary theater unit culminating with 15+ student-created theater performances. Show less

I began my education career teaching 120+ 12th grade students English at Christian Fenger Academy High School. I backwards-planned and implemented units centered on short stories, A Raisin in the Sun, Maus, and The Great Gatsby and provided accommodations and modifications for students with IEPs as well as enrichment lessons and activities for an honors section. I collaborated with English department colleagues with the backwards alignment of Common Core State Standards and implemented a school-wide writing curriculum in my classroom. Show less
