Glenn LESAK
I served as the Chief of Party for the REETE (the French acronym for "Reducing the Exploitation of Child Labor through Education") that was a joint project of Save the Children/UK and the Solidarity Center/AFL-CIO from 2007 to 2010. Even though Michael joined the project almost midway through the three-year project he quickly mastered the details and challenges. His analytical approach, attention to detail and communication skills contributed directly to the project's successes. He assembled and directed a quality team for the implementation of the project that exceeded project targets (children removed from working in mines to participating in one of three educational options: elementary school, accelerated learning or vocational training) by 13%. Further achievements include labour rights for migrant and export processing zone workers in Morocco.Feb 2009 – Dec 2010, Kinshasa, DRC: Responsible for initiating, developing and strengthening official and informal relations between the AFL-CIO and their counterpart trade union organizations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, I facilitated the application of core labour standards in the DRC’s Large Scale Mining sector, specifically at Tenke Fungurume Mining – one of the world’s largest copper producers. In addition, I managed the Katanga portion of a U.S. Department of Labor funded anti the worst forms of child labour (WFCL) programme called "Réduire l'Exploitation des Enfants Travailleurs par l'Education" (REETE ), in partnership with Save the Children (UK), which helped over 12,000 children working in artisanal mines.
