-Oral Proficiency: Students create audio/visual projects which demonstrate knowledge of conjugations, vocabulary, proper inflection, and pronunciation.-Aural Comprehension: Audio Activities, Realidades Audio Activities, and Eres Tú María Video series, students respond in both written and oral form to information provided.-Written Proficiency: Students create portfolios of writing tasks such as letter to e-pals from Spain, hypothetical letters to other correspondents, and responses to reading passages in from the text books.-Total Physical Response (TPR): Common games such as “Simon Says” (vocabulary), “Four Corners” (places and commands), “I Spy” (game created to reinforce the use of prepositions in language). -Culture: Thematic units, Cultural readings and Globe Trekker video enhance student understanding by presenting varying traditions and world perspectives of target culture.-Geography: The dialectal differences are constantly discussed in conjunction with a study of regional variance. Cooperative learning groups become “experts” in a Spanish-speaking region and teach their peers the geographical features specific to the area.-Technology Integration: Widespread throughout each lesson. -Gaming: To provoke natural speech in meaningful contexts, “Guess Who” allows the students to describe physical characteristics. “Battleship,” as syntactical tool for adjective placement, is a favorite and often-requested game for eighth graders this year. For vocabulary retention, “Memory,” “Go, Fish,” and “Bingo” provide variety in acquisition.-Current Events in the Spanish-Speaking World: The FX series, “30 Days,” which addresses the issue of immigration from the Spanish-speaking world, proved to be an effective and powerful image of the struggles of the less fortunate for students that live relatively privileged lives. Current events are also a regularly assessed topic of discussion for high school students.-Curriculum Creation
