  Shady Maples is old soul rock, Americana, Latin and folk with California roots, seeds and branches. Their debut 2012 album is a boiling concoction of acoustic, lapsteel and electric guitars, organs, mandolin, and harmony. Singer songwriter and guitarist Owen Roberts wraps "visceral lyrics" (SF Chronicle) around hard driving and kick back melodies for a sound that swells and recedes. My students listen to music from different genres, paying close attention to the lyrics and song structure. They collaborate and work individually to write lyrics and think of a musical styles and melodies for their songs. After revising their lyrics we make recordings using professional recording equipment, instrumental accompaniment, and Garageband samples.   I was head coach of Bard College's NCAA Division III men’s volleyball team for four years, two of those years I coached of women’s volleyball team as well. My first year with the men's team in 2003 our record was 1-11 in a conference that dissolved within two years. Three years later we were 17-9 and competing in the top east coast Division III conference. I was honored to receive Coach of the Year awards from both the North Eastern Athletic Conference and the Bard College Athletics Department.
