I worked closely with Mohammad Shahsavari at Carleton University’s Advanced Geotechnical Research Laboratory while we worked on our graduate thesis projects. It was a complete pleasure and honor to work with him. Below are some of the highlights of Mohammad’s work ethic and professionalism. He has an exemplary team work attitude. Mohammad was a straight A+ student with a humble attitude; he was always ready to assist others in problem solving, trouble shooting and finding solutions to technical problems. Mohammad’s communication and interpersonal skills are nothing short of A+ as well. Mohammad is passionate about learning and always discusses scientific topics and developments with great enthusiasm. He is very precise and meticulous when performing tests and analyzing results. He has great command of related scientific and engineering principles and applied his knowledge to interpret and report results of his tests. He worked tirelessly with dedication to excel in all that he did. His project management skills were superior as he set clear goals, determined priorities, and collaborated with his academic supervisor, technicians and fellow researchers to implement and conclude his research.

-Detailed design of Tailings Storage Facilities (TSF). Worked on cross-disciplinary topics including the design of seepage collection ditches and water balance management of the TMF site in addition to the geotechnical design of the dam. -Dam safety review -Static liquefaction potential assessment -Presented the design to the client and the independent tailings review board (ITRB). -Dam core deformation analysis using FLAC. -Sub-surface characterization including in-situ (including CPT, FVT, and SPT) and laboratory testing (including permeability, triaxial, direct shear, and simple shear tests) planing and results interpretation. -Evaluated the liquefaction potential of the weak foundation soil units through developing a cyclic simple shear testing program and performing SHAKE2000 analysis in addition to using the CPT based analyses. -Prepared dam monitoring plan and instrumentation. -Designed filters for the TMF dams. -Prepared the design and site investigation reports in addition to the tender and construction documents. -Performed large strain consolidaiton modelling of tailings using FLAC. The results were used to simulate the unsaturated water flow through the tailings using SoilVision’s SVFlux. -Designed geotextiles and geomembranes to cover tailing. -Derived the unsaturated tailings properties for the water flow and cover design purposes in collaboration with the geochemistry group.

      • Efficiently simulated consolidation of backfilled mine tailings during and after deposition using Itasca’s FLAC3D and Biot’s consolidation theory • Performed large scale column test to simulate the in-situ backfilling situation and verify the numerical analysis results • Successfully simulated the hydro-chemo-mechanically coupled consolidation of cemented mine tailings through the development of an optimized code in FISH (FLAC3D’s scripting language). The FLAC3D numerical simulation was then benchmarked against the analytical solution and the pore water pressure predictions were within 2% of the analytical solution. The FLAC3D code will be used by mining companies to optimize their backfilling strategy. The code makes it possible to have safer and cheaper barricades while the ore body extraction can be performed in a much shorter time • Performed detailed analysis and interpretation of in-situ monitoring • Performed novel permeability measurement and oedometer tests on cemented mine tailings samples at different ages with different loading rates that simulated the in-situ stress paths and curing conditions • Assisted undergraduate student with the numerical simulation of tailings dam stability and seepage analysis using Rocscience software packages • Simulated the Dynamic Response of cemented mine tailings using SHAKE2000 and developed an analysis method to evaluate their liquefaction susceptibility using a simplified approach • FLAC3D code was developed to simulate the response of backfilled mine tailings to rockbursts and earthquakes • Assisted undergraduate and graduate students in their Geotechnical Design course in designing deep and shallow foundations for a highway bridge project, slope stability analysis, retaining wall design, and preparation of the geotechnical report • Simulated the response of Ottawa and Fraser River sand using two different plasticity models (CamClay and Deviatoric Hardening) using Finite Difference in MatLab
