Jacqueline Hill volunteered in my English language classroom at Refugee and Immigrant Transitions, level 1, from 1/18/2019 through July of 2020, including both in-person and online instruction. I have nothing but good things to say about her volunteer work with us. She assisted with my English vocational and life skills class, working independently with a group of 2-8 adult English language learners from literacy level (still learning their ABC’s and basic conversations) up through early readers. She continued her volunteer work with us when we transitioned to online learning due to SIP restrictions. She taught students in groups and independently using online platforms, and devised and delivered her own remote lessons. In her volunteer work with our organization, Jacqueline worked with women ages 20-65 from various countries: Myanmar, Senegal, Guatemala, Bhutan, and Thailand, to name a few. She demonstrated a clear ability to build genuine rapport with learners from various backgrounds and showed cultural awareness and sensitivity to learners’ unique learning goals and strengths. Learners appreciated working with her and asked to work with her more. I often witnessed students who were linguistically isolated in class and who were commonly quiet and reserved during class times laughing along with Jacqueline and visibly enjoying themselves as they participated in her group work activities. Jacqueline demonstrated a positive attitude, flexibility, adaptability to the changing learning environment of adult community-based learning. Each day she was able to draw on the learning objectives provided, adapt to the level, learning needs and goals of the students she was grouped with, and devise her own activities on the spot to reflect and scaffold those learning objectives. When we transitioned to online learning, she did not hesitate to offer assistance and ideas, and was able to smoothly transition her teaching style to an online platform. Jacqueline also excelled at leading whole class instruction when needed. Her classroom management style is calm, well organized, detail-oriented and dependable. She is able to assess learners’ comprehension, focus, different learning needs and even sense of humor and friendships, and synthesize these to create an environment in the classroom where learners feel welcomed, comfortable, and seen. I felt very comfortable with her leading not just group work but whole class activities as needed. In summary, I would highly recommend Jacqueline for an instructor position for adult, immigrant, English-language learners, and she would be an asset to any program or school that serves these populations.

Jacqueline Hill taught several sessions of my adult ESL class in the West Contra Costa School District. I helped mentor her, and she was always well prepared. The class was fully engaged and looked forward to the days when she would be teaching them. She would be a great asset to any program!
