Principally, I research and write advertorial supplements for Elite Business and its sister magazine, Elite Franchise. This usually involves in-depth industry analysis, case studies and an interview with one or more senior executives. In addition, I produce news stories, interviews and sponsored thought leadership pieces for the Elite Business website. I see myself primarily as a commercial writer or content writer, pursuing freelance opportunities. At the same time, I've a strong interest in the arts and entertainment scene, as you'll see from some of my clippings. I've been freelance since 2001, when I left my job as features editor at the Highbury & Islington Express. In London I was in great demand as a subeditor, but since 2016 I've been working remotely from my hometown of Hartlepool, County Durham. Over the course of nearly a year, I overhauled the website of interior designer Natalia Barbour's luxury property development company. Although the copy would be in plain English, we agreed on a sophisticated, upmarket tone of voice that would suit Natalia's clientele. I also rewrote a flyer for the company. In her testimonial, Natalia wrote: "David stood out from the line of writers I considered for this project. He studied the subject and offered constructive ideas even at the enquiry stage. Later, David quickly grasped the most attractive features of our business offer and skillfully highlighted them. His style is sharp and easy to read. Working with David is a delight - always prompt and receptive. Best investment for any business." Show less

In September 2018, McFarland, the respected American academic press, published my book George Orwell on Screen: Adaptations, Documentaries and Docudramas on Film and Television. It received glowing reviews and was one of the Times Literary Supplement's books of the year. When the Criterion Collection decided to release a special edition DVD/Blu-ray of '1984' (the John Hurt film), I was interviewed in London for what turned out to be a 22-minute DVD extra. Once I'd settled in as CNBC Business's subeditor/copy editor (see below), the magazine's editor suggested I write articles for it. Shortly before the title closed in 2012, this culminated in my flying to Beijing, as sole representative of the UK press, to cover the opening of a luxury Montblanc store and interview the company's CEO.

I worked for editor Boyd Farrow on CNBC Business, an internationally distributed magazine aimed at a general audience. Most of our feature writers were foreign journalists - the news editor of the Moscow Times reporting on a Russian business initiative, for instance (that's just from memory!). But while the information was all present and correct, more often than not I had to rewrite the articles in colloquial English. Translating complex topics into more conversational, user-friendly language has turned out to be one of my more valuable skills. Show less

For several years, I was the most favoured 'casual sub' on Tatler, the high-society magazine. This involved writing headlines, standfirsts and captions in its inimitable style and, more generally, tweaking or heavily rewriting the articles themselves. After the editor, Geordie Greig, became editor of the Daily Mail, he wrote this testimonial for me: "David Ryan is an extremely good-natured and hard-working professional journalist. He was always helpful and polite to work with when I was editor of Tatler." Show less

Britain's most high-class local newspaper, the weekly Hampstead & Highgate Express (Ham&High), launched a spinoff paper in Islington in the mid-1990s. This area of London had become partially gentrified and was home to Tony Blair and other senior Labour Party figures. When I joined the Highbury & Islington Express (High&I) in 1999, my brief was to write news from Monday to Wednesday and cover the thriving arts scene (particularly theatre) for the rest of the week. After roughly a year, I was promoted to the role of arts and features editor and received training as a subeditor (copy editor). In addition to editing news pages, I commissioned features, reviewed a lot of plays and interviewed showbusiness celebrities. Show less
