I developed and taught 2 lectures annually to graduate students in the Molecular and Systems Pharmacology Program's introductory pharmacology curriculum. One of my lectures focused on neuropeptidgergic signaling in metabolic disorders and substance abuse. My other lecture focused on the molecular pharmacology of glial cell biology.

      • Aug 2011 - Mar 2017

I completed my dissertation in the laboratory of Randy Hall in the Emory University School of Medicine Department of Pharmacology. In my work, I used primary cell culture and animal models of Multiple Sclerosis, with the goal of determining the role of two orphan G protein-coupled receptors in oligodendrocyte survival and demyelination. I completed a high throughput screen for small molecule activators of GPR37, with the goal of identifying potential lead compounds for the treatment of Multiple Sclerosis. I am interested broadly in glial neurobiology and receptor-mediated signaling. Show less

I proposed and was awarded a Howard Hughes Medical Institute curriculum development grant to pioneer the first class on glia taught at Emory University. With mentorship from the neuroscience department, I developed a syllabus for an upper-level elective course with a heavy emphasis on primary literature analysis and journal club presentations. In particular, we focused on the analysis and critique of published clinical trials. I taught this class for this first time in the fall semester of 2016. In addition to focusing on cutting-edge research, I guided 17 students in writing submission-quality NSF-GRFP grant proposals over the course of the semester. Show less

I worked in a team of 5 SIRE fellows and with the office of undergraduate education at Emory University to develop weekly workshops for undergraduates in their first research experience. I also led weekly professional development and research skills sessions for a group of 13 undergraduate students. My group included students of diverse academic backgrounds and ranged from freshmen to juniors; we placed a specific emphasis on interdisciplinary research in our discussions.

Graduate teaching assistant in PSYC 323: Drugs and Behavior. Responsibilities included teaching a brief introduction to G protein-coupled receptors and intracellular signaling, holding weekly review sessions, and grading exams for a class of 120 students. I also offered one on one mentoring for students who struggled with the material.

I designed and led weekly ethics seminars on the responsible conduct of research for 10 undergraduate research students. Utilizing interactive case studies, I covered a wide range of relevant topics, including conflict of interest, good clinical and laboratory practices, human subjects research, and information security.
