As a Junior Conflicts Analyst I have begun to handle the analysis for candidates in addition to handling research. My new responsibilities require me to communicate with members of HR, Firm partners, & sometimes the candidates in order to clear conflicts of interest. As someone with more experience, I have served as an official and unofficial mentor to new members of the team as they gain research experience. From July 2019 to September 2019 I served as one of two coordinators for Fall Associates. As a coordinator I had to go over all of the information we received from candidates. I then compiled all of this information into a chart prior to assigning work to the rest of the team. As the team worked on their assignments, I answered questions as they came up.

When I was an Analyst Assistant I would receive disclosures that contained information on the work history of individuals hoping to join the Firm. This was done to avoid conflicts of interest. I would conduct research on the various businesses and individuals that prospective employees had been exposed to and then search the Firm’s database to see if it had been involved in the same cases, which could lead to a conflict of interest. All of this information was ultimately summarized in a write up.At times, I was tasked with being the lead researcher on candidates assigned to the team. This required me to assign research to other team members and keeping track of their progress. Being lead researcher also required me to update the Firm’s databased with information concerning those who were hoping to join and those who had joined. At one point, another researcher and I went through our database to update information that was considered inaccurate.

I largely did research work for our client, one of the United States’ top four biggest banks. This work was for compliance purposes and required customer due diligence and enhanced due diligence on the bank’s customers. This was done using documentation already held by the bank and using information available through external sources to locate missing information, and ensure current information was accurate. All the information I found was ultimately summarized into a single documentation tool. In addition to research, I also did some coordinating work on my team. This required me to closely follow the research process of others to see information we had and did not have. When information was missing, I discussed with more senior members of my team to see whether or not outreach to the client was necessary. When I did reach out to our client, I would summarize information we had and the exact information we needed. Besides research and coordinating, I provide assistance to the rest of the office’s employees. Early on, I helped with training new employees. I also served as a subject matter expert to assist current employees by making them aware of new policies and procedures. In addition to these formal duties, I also took part in other projects meant to make our research more effective. With another member of my team, I created an electronic document that compiled information from our manual and external sources in order to create a single source of information. This was something we would continuously update. Other projects, albeit ones that were short-term included me being one of three individuals tasked with creating a quick reference guide that summarized the best sources that could be used to locate necessary information. Another project was meant to get previously unapproved documents approved by showing how they could be used to gather information that was previously seen as missing.

During my internship, my primary duty was to follow daily events happening in Egypt using various publications made by news organizations and other think tanks and the social media postings of experts. I used all of this information to create approximately fourteen databases on various developments happening in Egypt, including: economic, security, and political developments. Another set of databases created by me was used to track developments concerning the Middle-East’s Christian minority. I also conducted research for the purpose of writing memos on topics that ranged from President Obama’s first few addresses to the United Nations to military developments in the Syrian Civil War. Sometimes I would attend events sponsored by other think tanks where topics of discussion include American military assistance to the Middle-East and politics in the Middle-East. The notes I took would be used written up into memos for future research. In addition to assisting in gathering information for research purposes, I also engaged in some administrative work primarily involving the setup of events sponsored by the center.
