Since August 2013, I have been conducted research in Dr. Richard Page’s lab at Miami University. I have worked directly with Jamie VanPelt, a Page Lab graduate student, on several projects. First, we have been worked to determine the structural and biophysical properties that prime STAT3 for activation and sequential Ser727/Thr714 phosphorylation. Second, we characterized a key protein extracted from the Moringa oleifera tree that can be used to filter water inexpensively in third world countries. Third, I have solved the X-ray crystal structure of a complex between CHIP-TPR and phosphorylated Hsp70. To help complete my research, I was awarded the Undergraduate Summer Scholars grant from Miami University to continue the research listed above through summer 2014 semester. Each of these research projects has provided me with valuable laboratory experience. I have learned how to express and purify proteins, make buffer solutions, and analyze protein samples for purity. Techniques I have used include SDS-PAGE, Western Blotting, Immunostaining, MALDI, dialysis, liquid chromatography using an FPLC, spectrophotometry, and crystallization techniques. I also have experience with PCR, ELISA, and Bioinformatic resources such as BLAST, ExPASy, BRENDA, and NEBcutter.
