I have had the pleasure of knowing Rosette Fernandez Loughlin while she attended SDSU and was part of the NIH funded, Minority Access to Research Careers Program, the goal of the MARC program is to increase the number of well-prepared underrepresented students who can successfully gain acceptance into graduate studies in a biomedical science. To this end, San Diego State University recruits and trains 10 honors underrepresented undergraduate students per year. The program is strongly research oriented and students work closely with faculty research mentors on projects that will, hopefully, result in a paper presentations or publication. Rosette was a wonderful MARC scholar and undergraduate researcher. She attended conferences and presented her research. Post SDSU, Rosette has worked at the Scripps Research Institute and the CDC. With her strong research background and strong work ethic, I believe Rosette is a strong candidate for research and managerial positions. We would definitely hire her to mentor current SDSU undergraduates if the opportunity arose.

Investigated the role of Uncoupling Protein 2 (UCP2) transgene in thermoregulation and ageing utilizing molecular approaches. Investigated the roles of Interleukin-18 and Interleukin-18r in feeding utilizing in vivo and in vitro approaches. Examined the roles of IL-18 and ApolipoproteinE in the development of atherosclerosis utilizing histological analyses of murine aortas. Investigated the role of an enterobacterial autoinducer in the resuscitation of environmentally-stressed coliforms. Study involved research, drafting and submission of proposal, experimental design, field sampling, enumeration of coliforms and E. coli using standard methods, and presentation of final report. Collaborated with researchers at the University of Leicester, United Kingdom, and City of San Diego Water Reclamation Facility, and the supervision of a summer laboratory assistant.
