As a teacher at John Milledge Academy, I led instruction in grammar, writing, composition, spelling, and vocabulary for 80 students. Managing 5 separate classes including College Prep, Honors, and Advanced Placement courses, I had a considerable amount of experience proofreading and editing more than 500 papers as I trained students in effective use of persuasive language and creativity. Aside from larger writing assignments, I led practical application exercises in which I coached students in different styles, voice, and tactics for essay writing. I provided instruction on parts of speech, grammar usage, and research techniques encompassing processes and documentation of sources. To enhance communications with students and parents, I developed and managed a teacher webpage, creating all copy, content, graphics, and design. This provided access to all handouts, study guides, and PowerPoint presentations and encouraged a deeper level of engagement from my class. I had the amazing opportunity of working alongside the director of the English department to design timelines for the high school English scope and sequence. We also worked together creating, proofreading, and editing student teaching materials, including handouts, study guides, and exams. As the coordinator of the spring sports concession stand, I organized and delegated work assignments to 30 volunteers who served more than 100 visitors at each event. This included not only recruiting volunteers but also overseeing their assigned duties. Show less

Teaching at Calvary Christian School afforded me the opportunity of working with a wonderful teaching staff and students as well. Using A Beka and Bob Jones curricula, I educated approximately 150 students in grammar, vocabulary, spelling, writing, and reading. My goal was to teach my 6 classes in such a way as to prepare my students for their advancement into high school. Partnering with English department staff, I co-developed a comprehensive teaching strategy in order to prevent student shortfalls during the year and make sure the students were ready for the next grade. With the other English teachers, I helped to set milestones, goals, and objectives for teachers of rising middle school and high school students. I proofread as many as 50 essays each month, giving feedback that I knew would lead to improvement in the quality of the writing that students submitted to me. I often spent time with students after school, offering mentorship and other instruction. In doing so, I helped one student make revisions in her essay that enabled her to secure a scholarship of more than $60,500 to a private high school with her award-winning essay. Additionally, during classroom instruction of all units, I applied varying techniques in my instructional presentation using theories of Learning Styles and Multiple Intelligences to appeal to and captivate each student’s attention. I performed a number of public relation initiatives, including attendance of school functions, meetings, concerts, sporting events, and meet-and-greet sessions with parents. I also organized a girls’ Christmas crafting day for 60 students. With such a tight schedule for organizing events, managing student writing projects, grading papers, and developing lesson plans, I used RenWeb management software to track progress and complete projects on time.
